Growing Like Weed

Image
Kira is growing! She's already too big for some of her clothes. She keeps busting out of them...the buttons snap open! How embarassing =) Some of her outfits were hidden away for a while. I just recently discovered them and she's too big for them already! She has a really cute pink corduroy overalls outfit and it's way too tight. I made her wear it the other day anyway becuase it was so darn cute. I need to keep better tabs on her wardrobe!

New "Specs"

Here are Kira's new measurements from our doctor's visit last week: Weight: 9 lbs 9 oz Height: 21.75 in Head: 36.5 cm Doc says the head is still on the small side =)

Thanks Rich

I was 9 when Richard was born. I remember being really excited to help my mom take care of him. I'm not sure my mom planned on it, but I ended up helping out a lot! By the time Richard was a few months old, I could do it all. I could feed him, bathe him, entertain him, and put him to sleep. I have two very clear memories of taking care of baby Richard. Ok, three. 1. Bouncing and walking back and forth in the hallway to get him to sleep. There were times when I did it for up to 20 minutes. Now I do the same thing for Kira. Having done it for Richard, it's easy for me to stay patient even at really late hours with Kira. 2. Holding and calming Richard while my mom gave him medicine. Richard caught a cold at a very young age. I remember my mom being pretty stressed out with trying to give medicine to Richard while he was crying hysterically. Eventually, she had me hold him while she gave him the medicine. It worked! I think this will help me deal with Kira's illnesses (knock on...

DUH

Last week we had Kira's 1-month appointment with the pediatrician. I had a whole bunch of questions for him about reflux and sleeping. For several weeks, Kira has consistently been very fussy during the hours of 12 and 3. She would cry incessantly, arch her back, kick her legs, and just not want to go back to sleep. I started to think she was having problems relieving gas in her tummy. After reading some articles online about how babies act when they have reflux, I wondered if Kira had it. The night before the doctor's appointment, Trevor and I were very very tired. We had struggled through several consecutive days of fussy nights. On a whim, I decided to swaddle Kira. Swaddling babies is very popular these days. They taught us to do it at the hospital. The first few weeks we were at home, we continued to swaddle Kira, but she would always bust out an arm or two, or a leg or something. So, Trevor and I figured that she didn't like being swaddled, and we stopped d...

Kira's Birthday

It's been four weeks since Kira was born. Only now do I feel like I'm starting to catch up with all the loose ends that were left hanging when she was born. One of those loose ends is reconnecting with my friends and family. I'm betting that some people haven't even heard the story of Kira's Birthday. Well, I'm going to document it here and even if most people have heard the story, it will be a good keepsake for Kira when she grows up. It was finally Saturday (Jan 19). Trevor and I had just gone through a long week. On Tuesday (Jan 16), I was rear-ended at a stop light. What a pain that was. Not only was my car towed, but also I was forced to go to the ER for 4 hours of fetal monitoring. The whole time, all I could worry about was the Asthma DB timebomb (an extremely time-sensitive assignment for work). Details about the car accident will have to wait for another blog entry. By the time I had finished the time bomb, I had to prepare for my annual review and addr...

I'm Kira's Mommy

Just these past few days I've really felt like Kira's Mommy. I know I probably should have felt like her Mommy from the moment she was born. But I guess with all the new things we had to learn how to do, I never really thought about it. Just lately I've noticed when Kira looks up at me, she seems relieved...or at peace...or something. It's hard to explain, but it feels good.

Top 10 Things I Love About Kira

In no particular order: 1. Flecks of brown in her black hair. 2. Laughing in her sleep. 3. Never getting upset with tummy time. 4. Splashing in the bath. 5. Being cute when dad comes home. 6. Fitting into some of her clothes. 7. Eating her vitamins. 8. Soft skin. 9. Waving her arms about in her sleep. 10. Holding up her head and looking around with curiosity.

10 Most Annoying Things About Taking Care of Kira

In no particular order: 1. Peeing the minute I take off her diaper, getting EVERYTHING wet. 2. Going hysterical when she can't burp. 3. Cranky every night from 12 to 3 (am) no matter what we do. 4. Being extra wiggly when trying to nurse. 5. Gulping way to fast and choking herself. 6. Taking up to thirty minutes to burp. 7. Locking up the legs when changing her diaper. 8. Pretending to wake up and then once picked up out of bed immediately goes back to sleep in our arms. 9. Having a food coma after less than 3 minutes of nursing. 10. Having a deep sleep whenever guests come to visit.

Second Pediatrician Visit: 2 Weeks Old

Image
Today was Kira's 2 week visit to the pediatrician. She checked in at 8 lbs and 2 oz. This is an increase of 1 lb and 6 oz over her first doctor's visit where she weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. She measured 20 1/4 inches compared to her 19 3/4 inches at birth. Though her head is a bit small and she is a tad underweight, the doctor said that given my (the dad's) stature everything seems to be on par. She is a bit taller than the norm and she does have a thin build. None of this comes as a shock to me at all!

Home Alone

Image
Today is my and Kira's first day home alone without Dad. So far, we're doing okay. I woke up to her cry. That's good! And we had a quick feeding. She didn't eat much at 10:30, so I think she will be hungry again very soon. And she's changed and clean. And now she's enjoying being cradled in my arms. She's being very alert. I love that, except I wish she would be alert in her bassinet instead. This morning would be even better if I could have some breakfast and get the laundry started. But, I guess I can't expect too much for our first day home alone. Later on this afternoon my mom will come over to give me a hand. Our plans are to give Kira a bath and then head over to the doctors for Kira's 2-week check up. There are two things I really want to ask the doctor. Firstly, we need to do something about her sticky eye! It's been like that since she was born. And secondly, I want to know how I can tell if Kira is in pain. She screams bloody murder a...

My first blog

Image
Every Tom, Dick, and Harry seems to have their own blog these days. As described by Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogging ) it certainly started before the world wide web became mainstream. This is my attempt at understanding what this whole fad is about. This is actually a javascript slideshow that pulls images from an album that I randomly selected from Flickr. This uses an iFrame html tag, I'm not yet sure what that tag means but it apparently works. I generated the html code from the following web page: Flickr_Album_Maker
