Mastitis Day
My first bout of mastitis started yesterday morning. I woke up feeling all out of sorts: my entire body was achy, certain places were tender and painful to the touch, and I had a fever of 99.2. Later on in the day my fever would go up to 102. Here's how the day went:
11:30 am - Woke up feeling crapy and called the doctor. The nurse answered and said the doctor would call me back. In the mean time, I fed Kira on the unaffected breast (which was engorged) and had some lunch.
1:00 pm - Doctor still hadn't called back, so Kira and I took a nap. She was such a good girl for Mommy. We slept soundly until 3:30! That's a long nap for Kira who normally sleeps only 20-45 mins.
3:30 - We woke up, and Kira was hungry. I would have liked to have asked the doctor whether it would be okay to feed Kira on the affected breast. But the doctor still hadn't called. So, I fed Kira on the affected breast. I had a temperature of 102 so I took 2 Tylenols (1300 mg total).
3:35 - The doctor called right after I finished feeding Kira. She asked me about my symptoms again and concluded that indeed I had mastitis. She said to alternate taking 500 mg Tylenol and 600 mg Motrin every three hours. And, she called in a prescription of antibiotics for me at the pharmacy near my house.
3:40 - I called the pharmacy to let them know I'm expecting a prescription. I had never actually ever needed a prescription since I moved to Ashland, so this would be the first time I would be in the system. The pharmacist input my information and said once the the doctor called it would be an hour until my prescription was ready.
4:00 - My parents arrive at my house as they normally do on Mondays. Upon hearing I was waiting for a prescription, my Dad immediately headed out to the pharmacy despite the lack of a confirmation that the meds were ready.
4:29 - My dad calls from the pharmacy to say they have nothing under my name. Strange.
4:30 - I called my doctor's office just to hear the voicemail say they close at 4:30.
4:35 - I called my Dad to tell him to come home because it appears there is no prescription for me at the pharmacy
4:40 - I call my doctor's answering service to page the physician on call.
5:30 - The physician on call had not called, so I had him paged again. The answering service says the doctor should be calling me back within 30 minutes.
6:00 - Physician on call still had not called me back so I paged him again.
6:30 - Paged him again
6:45 - Dr. Mason calls me and calls in a prescription for me. She was very thorough. She asked me for the phone number of the pharmacy to make sure they would get it!
7:30 - Trevor finally comes home with my prescription!!
That was a really crappy day.
