DUH

Last week we had Kira's 1-month appointment with the pediatrician. I had a whole bunch of questions for him about reflux and sleeping. For several weeks, Kira has consistently been very fussy during the hours of 12 and 3. She would cry incessantly, arch her back, kick her legs, and just not want to go back to sleep. I started to think she was having problems relieving gas in her tummy. After reading some articles online about how babies act when they have reflux, I wondered if Kira had it.

The night before the doctor's appointment, Trevor and I were very very tired. We had struggled through several consecutive days of fussy nights. On a whim, I decided to swaddle Kira. Swaddling babies is very popular these days. They taught us to do it at the hospital. The first few weeks we were at home, we continued to swaddle Kira, but she would always bust out an arm or two, or a leg or something. So, Trevor and I figured that she didn't like being swaddled, and we stopped doing it.

Well. The night we swaddled Kira, she slept a full 3 hours, woke up to feed, and then slept another full 3 hours! The swaddling worked!!! I felt a bit sheepish at our doctor's appointment when he asked if I had any questions about Kira. I told him I had a whole bunch, but that the problem seemed to have resolved itself!!! He kind of laughed at me and said that swaddling is the first line of action when dealing with a fussy baby at night...FIRST line of action! Why didn't we do this sooner?!? I guess where we went wrong was thinking Kira didn't like being swaddled. Instead, we should have just wrapped her TIGHTER.

DUH.
