Rookie Mom

I wonder when will I become a proficient mom. The most annoying thing happened today. My usual activity on Thursdays is to visit Trevor's parents' house. This gives them a chance to see Kira more often, and they can play with her while I relax and do other things. Hanging out with the in-laws is especially nice towards the end of the week when I have Kira-overload!

Today I had special plans to get my hair cut. I've been meaning to get it cut for weeks, and I wanted to take advantage of the available babysitters! So, I packed up some breast milk from my freezer and headed out. (Every now and then when I feel like I have extra breast milk, I'll pump it and stick it in the freezer for times when Kira and I might be temporarily separated.) Kira last fed at 8:30 am which means her next feeding would occur at approximately 11:30. Considering this, I made my hair cut appointment for 1:00.

Well, at 12:15 Kira was still fast asleep. I decided to set up for Kira's eventual feeding, i.e., defrost the milk and show Trevor's dad how to put the bottle together. To my great surprise, I packed a bottle for the milk, but no nipple! How would Kira drink her milk?? She wouldn't, that's how. At this point, I had few options. I decided to wake up Kira and quickly feed her for 10 minutes before leaving at 12:30, otherwise she would definitely wake up hungry (and angry) before I get back from the hair cut. This was an awkward plan because Kira can sleep through anything when she chooses. On the other hand, she wakes up to a pin drop during the times 12 and 2 am. I did everything I could to wake her up. I tickled her, I took off her socks, and I sang her favorite song. In the end she only nursed for about 5 minutes, which probably means she had 1 oz of breast milk. But it would have to do because I had to leave at 12:30.

I finally got back from my haircut at 2:30. It took forever to get my hair cut! My hairdresser was running late and I ran into traffic on Needham St (I'm never taking that route again). When I arrived, guess what. Kira was still sleeping. So, I guess she saved me this time.

Besides this slip up, I've already forgotten Kira's diaper bag on two occasions. Not once...twice! How can I forget her diaper bag??? I don't know. I guess I'll have to chalk it up to being a rookie mom.
