Strange, New Sleeping Habit

Since the day Kira was born, I have had trouble keeping her at a comfortable body temperature.  Until she was about 3 months old, she slept in a bassinet next to our bed.  I swaddled her and covered her with two blankets.  Despite that, I would almost always pick up a baby with chilly cheeks for night-time feedings.  I was at a loss for what I should do to warm her up.  It was the middle of winter when she was born, and our bedroom had vaulted ceilings, making it difficult to keep the room warm during the night.

It got even worse when she moved into the guest room.  It too had vaulted ceilings, plus it had one fewer heating vent and significantly less body heat.  I did my best to dress her very warmly, especially because she was very good at kicking off the blankets.  A typical sleeping outfit would include a long-sleeve onesie, a lightweight long-sleeve shirt, tights, and a bunny suit (the one-piece, zip-up fleece with the footies).  I think towards the spring she actually developed a heat rash because I over dressed her.

Now that we are in the new house, the ambient temperature is different.  Not to mention, we're in the middle of summer (although you could have fooled me!).  I put Kira down for bed at around 9:30 pm.  Now that she is taking only 1 nap per day, she's pretty tired by 9:30; she goes down without a peep.  However, 15 minutes after I put her down, she is screaming bloody murder; I pick her up and she's soaked in sweat!  Her hair is completely wet and she is in hysterics from the discomfort.  Funny thing is, her room isn't even that hot!  The air isn't exactly circulating, but it certainly isn't that warm.  In order to cool her down, we turn on a fan and sometimes we even turn on the air conditioning for a short while.  (Typically by this time of year it's not unusual for us to leave the air conditioning on all night, but it has been unseasonably cold these past 3-4 weeks!)  It would be easier just to open the windows since it's the perfect temperature at night, but I haven't cleaned the windows in our new house and I refuse to open the windows until I wash them!  By them time I've calmed Kira down and she has cooled off a bit, it's 10 pm.

For the past 3-4 days, Kira wakes up at 5:30 or 6 am crying.  I wake up and I think, it's way too early; she has only had 8 hours of sleep, a lot less than what she needs (i.e., approximately 10 hours of sleep).  I let her cry for a while hoping that she will just fall back to sleep, but after 15 minutes straight of moaning I realize she is fully awake.  So I reluctantly get out of bed, feed her some milk, and make myself some coffee.  By the time 8 am rolls around, Trevor has left for work and Kira is coloring while sitting in her highchair.  I look up from my laptop and Kira is dozing off!  Her head keeps dropping and her eyes are staring off into space.  I take her upstairs and she practically jumps out of my arms into her bed.  She proceeds to sleep until 11 am!  This strange, new sleeping habit is annoying.  I could have been sleeping!

I suspect Kira is waking up because she feels chilly.  Because she sweats like none other when I put her down to sleep, I don't cover her with blankets and she's dressed in a short-sleeve onesie and a light pair of pants.  Right before I go to bed at 12 am, I cover her with a light-weight blanket, which she inevitably kicks away at some point during the night.  When she wakes up at 5:30, her skin is cold.  This is my dilemma.  What should I do so that she is cool when she goes to bed, but warm in the morning so that she can sleep a few hours longer?  I can't wait for the day she is old enough to wake up, realize she is cold, and pull her blankets up over her shoulders.

Perhaps dress her warmly for bed but then leave the AC/fan on for an hour or two so that she is cool while falling asleep... and once she falls asleep and her temperature has dropped, you can shut off the AC and she'll also be warm in the morning since she has more clothes on?

Yes, I think that's what I end up doing. I put her in a short sleeve onesie with long pants. I leave two fans on, the window fan and the inside circulating fan. It gets pretty chilly! Then when I go to bed (at which point she's been sleeping for an hour or so, I turn off the window fan. It seems to have been working for the past three days! phew! But it's always tempting for me to put more clothes on her because when I go in to check on her at various times, her skin is cold. I guess I should get over that because she never wakes up with a runny nose or anything like that.
