Renee Taking Classes
I think Renee is slowly coming out of her shell. She has always been more clingy to me than Kira ever was. Kira had stranger anxiety at age 4 months, but that eventually went away, at the very latest by 9 months (probably as early at 6 months)! Renee is now 18 months and she still clamors up my leg in the presence of other people.
Renee is taking two classes this fall. The first is a music class in Wellesley. Wellesley is a bit far from where we live, but the reason why we go there is because it's more or less halfway between my house and my mom's house. We meet there at the start of class. I hand over Renee, and go home. After class, my mom takes Renee back to her house for the afternoon. In the evening, we meet for dinner somewhere, and I take Renee back home. I attended the first class with Renee and my mom. Renee was super shy and her expression was clear: she didn't want to participate. By the second class, my mom reported to me that Renee behaved mostly the same but seemed to warm up slightly. Tomorrow will be the third class and I'm hoping Renee will show some enjoyment. I've been playing the CD that was included in the enrollment to the class. We listen to it in the car, and Renee claps and sings along! Thus, she is familiar with the music, it's just a matter of letting her walls down.
The second class Renee attends is a Wayland Recreation gym session. It's led by the same teacher that Kira had when Kira took the same class. The first 10-15 minutes of the class is free play. There are play mats, tires (for stepping), a slide, and large yoga balls for entertainment. Then, the teacher blows the whistle, and for another 15 minutes, we sing songs that involve jumping and falling down, and stretching, and kicking, and things like that. Then the teacher will take out an activity, which is different every week; for example, a parachute, or a tunnel, or a large foam donut (the kids lie in the inside curve and she rocks it back and forth). And they learn to take turns doing the activity. Finally the very last thing they do is start at one end of the gym and run to the other end about 3 times. She attracts the kids by patting the matted walls on either side of the room. "tap tap tap, pat pat pat" she shouts while banging on the mats. The kids run over to join in. When all of them have congregated, she yells, GO! And everyone runs to the other side, and once she gets there, she yells, "tap tap tap! pat pat pat!" The kids come and then she yells, GO! and they all run to the other side again! I could never get Kira to participate during this part of the class. I think it was too much energy and commotion for her. She's such a party pooper in that sense. She hates wild behavior. Renee on the other hand is a follower! She has followed and imitated Kira from the very beginning. And so, this activity is very easy for her! And, she likes to run. So, it's perfect. I would say Renee is doing excellent in the gym class.
I look forward to hearing what my mom says about the music class tomorrow.
